Who We Are

Adventurous Learners is a program that uses tabletop role-playing games to accelerate children's personal, social, and academic development.
Designed for both neurotypical and neurodivergent children, the program encourages confidence, communication, collaboration, and creativity through imaginative play.

Through play, we explore different fantastic scenarios that parallel their real world. While having fun, children are challenged to find solutions to puzzles, problems, and interpersonal relationships. They consider long-term strategic plans, the consequences of their imaginary actions, and how others might be feeling in response to their imaginary dialogues.

These challenges happen naturally throughout the adventure, giving children opportunities to reflect, practise new skills, and build a positive confidence in a welcoming, supervised and supportive environment.

What is a Role-Playing Game?

A role-playing game is a collaborative storytelling experience where each child creates a character and decides what they say, do, and how they respond to challenges. The storyteller guides the adventure and brings the world to life using props, puppets, hand-drawn maps, character voices, and more. The children's choices shape what happens next, making every adventure unique and often filled with laughter, surprises, and plenty of imagination.

Art, hands-on creativity and meaning making are also part of the experience. Children might design characters, create puppets, craft wands, draw maps, or make magical objects that become part of their adventures. Costumes and imaginative expression are always encouraged!

Learning Social Skills Through Play

A central focus of Adventurous Learners is helping children develop strong social skills, including communication, empathy, cooperation, conflict resolution, and an understanding of how their actions affect others.

Rather than using shame, guilt, or punishment to address challenging behaviors, I take opportunities to pause the game or conversation and have open, supportive discussions about what has happened. Together, we explore different perspectives, consider how others might be feeling, and discuss ways to approach similar situations in the future.

These conversations happen naturally throughout the adventure, giving children opportunities to reflect, practise new skills, and build positive relationships in a welcoming and supportive environment.

What a session is like

Children are welcomed into a small group, given time to settle in and connect, then guided through an ongoing interactive story. As they explore, solve problems, negotiate, and make choices, they practice communication, teamwork, creativity, confidence, perspective-taking, and flexible thinking.

Literacy & Critical Thinking

Storytelling through play naturally fosters vocabulary, comprehension, and the ability to analyze complex narratives.

Conflict Resolution

Negotiating different perspectives in a safe, guided setting helps children learn to disagree respectfully and find compromise.

Skills That Last a Lifetime

Every session is designed to develop the whole child — academically, socially, and emotionally.

Creativity & Imagination

Building worlds together pushes children to think outside the box and use their imagination to solve unique problems.

Math & Logic

Navigating challenges within a game requires counting, probability assessment, and tactical problem-solving.

Social Skills & Communication

Working as a team to reach a common goal practices active listening, group sharing, and expressive communication.

Resilience & Emotional Regulation

Games involve risk and setbacks, providing a low-stakes environment to practice handling frustration and building emotional strength.

Every Child Deserves This

Adventurous Learners is designed for children ages 6+. This is especially a great fit for: creative kids who love stories, games, and imaginative play, children who are shy, anxious, or find large social settings overwhelming, neurodiverse learners — including children with ADHD, autism spectrum traits, anxiety, or other learning differences, kids who learn best through doing, and children looking for a safe, affirming space — LGBTQ+ youth are especially welcome here!

Mark has extensive experience working with neurodiverse children and brings genuine care, patience, and expertise to every group. No child is expected to perform or participate in any one "right" way — every style of engagement is honored.

Hi — I’m Mark Graham, a teacher, storyteller, and former professional circus performer. I hold a Master of Education specializing in Neurodiversity and Literacy, as well as a Bachelor of Circus Arts from Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia. With more than a decade of teaching and performance experience in Australia and internationally, I currently teach in a Montessori school in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. I have also worked in specialists schools for children with autism, and I bring a Montessori-informed approach to my work. I believe children thrive when they are trusted, given room to explore, and encouraged to take the lead in meaningful learning.

Adventurous Learners grew from that belief: a creative, collaborative program where children can imagine together, build confidence, and feel genuinely seen.

A Few Words From the Storyteller

In my years working with children across schools, studios, and enrichment programs, I've noticed something quietly shifting. Kids today are bright, curious, and full of ideas — but fewer and fewer have regular opportunities to practice imaginative play together. The imaginary games, neighborhood adventures, and afternoons of open-ended pretend that used to fill children's lives have largely given way to structured activities and screen time. Something gets lost in that trade-off, and I've seen it up close. I've watched children absolutely light up the first time they're given permission to invent a character and step into a story with a group of peers. That spark isn't small. Shared imaginative play is how children practice empathy, develop resilience, navigate disagreement, and build the confidence to speak up and be heard. These are skills that don't grow automatically — they need space, practice, and the right environment. Adventurous Learners exists to give children exactly that: a dedicated, joyful space to grow together.

What Our Families Say

"RPG helped increase his self confidence. I especially loved that he was always excited to share all the details of each session."

- A Happy Parent

"I absolutely would recommend, my son loves it and has even met friends outside of school hours to roleplay. He’s asked me to make roleplaying character sheets that he writes on and reads from, giving him great practice with both skills. It’s clearly wonderful for imagination and playfulness too."

K. Killian

"RPG has been a major reason my son is enthusiastic about school. It’s given him a place where he can completely be himself and that he always looks forward to. As a bonus, it’s helped him follow complex storylines and rules for long periods of time. Win!"

N. Pearson

"Mark is an absolute joy with the kids. His enthusiasm is contagious and his ability to connect meaningfully with the kids through play is impactful."

- Another Happy Parent

"Since starting RPG Club, my daughter has been inspired to read more adventure stories, and her reading has improved so much! The social side of the club has also helped her build new friendships and become more confident at school."
